Tips for picking a great domain name

The right domain name can make all the difference in the world; it can be the difference between someone finding you online or ending up at a competitor’s site. Here are the things we think about when picking out a new domain:
  1. Shortness – really the shorter the domain name the better! But is still needs to make sense.
  2. Branding: Does it reflect the business name or purpose? If you have a yoga studio and you buy the domain extremeblankets.com it is a little hard to make the connection. A better idea is to include your business name or even location in your URL. That same yoga studio could use yogaonmain.com to communicate what they do and where they are.
  3. Is it easy to spell and remember? While it may be fun and meaningful (to you) to create a composite of your kids names for the URL for your business; your clients are not likely to remember Livdrumax.com like you are. I have hesitated to even buy my personal name as a domain because my last name is so hard to spell and my first name has multiple common variations. Which brings us to the next point.
  4. Purchase multiple if needed. If there is an easy way someone could interpret your business name as something close; then purchase that something close if it is available. Here are some examples:
  • fourwheelshop.com and 4wheelshop.com
  • tedsparts.com and partsted.com
  • gr8terplanning.com and greaterplanning.com

***ALWAYS go for a .com It may be convenient that a .net or .biz or .org is available but they are not substitute for a .com***

We hope this helps! You can always point your multiple domains to one website, so buy a few as they are available and use what you like the most. Connect with us when you are ready to develop your site. Comment with ideas and examples.
