How Often Should You Blog?

8/10/2019

How often you should blog depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your blog or website. For basic business websites once a month is good to help with SEO (search engine optimization). If your website is a reference place for information then once a week is probably better. If you are really serious about your blog then making an effort daily is the best bet.

We love our website platform because we can edit and post our blogs from a smart device. This makes it easy to write out thoughts from everywhere and anywhere and be able to share them with the world. The title will often come through as the date but that is easily edited from the desktop service.

It is always good to post links to your recent blog posts on social media, in e-newsletters, and even cross-link information as references from other parts of your website.

Don't know what to write about? Pick up a book of writing prompts that relate to your area of business. Brainstorm a bunch of ideas for blog posts and put them on slips of paper; put those slips of paper in a jar and randomly choose one when you are looking for inspiration. Look through old notebooks and planners to find topics you may want to cover in a future post.

Share how often you post on your blog and a link to your blog in the comments.

One of the most visited pages of a business website is the About Us page. This is your opportunity to make a customer for life by telling a compelling story about your business.

About Us pages are also a great way to help with SEO.

Here are some best practices for creating your About Us page:
  • Don't be hasty - this is a destination for your customers to learn about you.
  • Paint a virtual picture of your business - incorporate all the senses if you can (feelings, scents, tastes, sights, sounds).
  • Give a short history of how your business came to be.
  • Consider having a professional write it for you (or at least edit it for you).
  • The goal is to engage and inspire the reader.

Audit your current About Us and see if it meets the abouve criteria. What other tips and tricks have you found helpful for writing your About Me section of your site? Share in the comments.

How a personal website can help your job search

Take a minute to open another tab and google yourself.

What came up? What are potential employers seeing about you? Your social media profiles? Professional pictures and memberships?

You can influence what comes up upon a search of your name by having a personal website (domain name as your full name). Some ideas for content to include are as follows:
  1. Your resume
  2. A personal but professional blog
  3. Certificates/Degrees
  4. A simple contact form and basic contact information you don’t mind having public
  5. Links to appropriate social media (so people can find the real you and not a profile that could be you)
  6. Pictures (be sure to label pictures with your name so they show up in google image searches)
  7. Hobbies
We can help you create and publish a personal website with password protected pages so that you can put specialized content for potential employers. We can also help with SEO to make sure people are finding you when searching for you!

Tips for picking a great domain name

The right domain name can make all the difference in the world; it can be the difference between someone finding you online or ending up at a competitor’s site. Here are the things we think about when picking out a new domain:
  1. Shortness – really the shorter the domain name the better! But is still needs to make sense.
  2. Branding: Does it reflect the business name or purpose? If you have a yoga studio and you buy the domain extremeblankets.com it is a little hard to make the connection. A better idea is to include your business name or even location in your URL. That same yoga studio could use yogaonmain.com to communicate what they do and where they are.
  3. Is it easy to spell and remember? While it may be fun and meaningful (to you) to create a composite of your kids names for the URL for your business; your clients are not likely to remember Livdrumax.com like you are. I have hesitated to even buy my personal name as a domain because my last name is so hard to spell and my first name has multiple common variations. Which brings us to the next point.
  4. Purchase multiple if needed. If there is an easy way someone could interpret your business name as something close; then purchase that something close if it is available. Here are some examples:
  • fourwheelshop.com and 4wheelshop.com
  • tedsparts.com and partsted.com
  • gr8terplanning.com and greaterplanning.com

***ALWAYS go for a .com It may be convenient that a .net or .biz or .org is available but they are not substitute for a .com***

We hope this helps! You can always point your multiple domains to one website, so buy a few as they are available and use what you like the most. Connect with us when you are ready to develop your site. Comment with ideas and examples.
